Whether you call them Serviceberry, Juneberry, Amelanchier or Shadblow, they are the same great trees. There are several varieties of tree-form serviceberry and a few are considered to be shrub-form. They have nice, smooth grey bark, exhibit a beautiful reddish fall leaf color, and are grown as clumps or as single stems. Like birch trees, they are more attractive as a clump. With the coming of Spring, the native variety, Canadian Serviceberry (Amelanchier Canadensis) will be found in blossom along the edges of woods with white flowers that cover the stems. Along with Pin Cherry, they are among the first ornamental trees to blossom in the Spring. When the weather stays cool they will blossom for an extended period of time. After the flowers fade, berries appear. They ripen around the first part of June to a small purplish-black berry- hence the name Juneberry. The fruit does not usually last long on the trees as birds devour them in record time! In the Eastern States they flower when the shad (fish) are running in the rivers, so they are also commonly called shad or shadblow.
Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (Amelanchier “autumn brilliance”) is a cultivar that we sell and is one of the most commonly sold in the Nursery Business. Autumn Brilliance is an improved variety that is a cross between Allegany Serviceberry and Downy Serviceberry. Autumn Brilliance grows in hanging clusters of white flowers and has a brilliant red-orange color in the Fall, and it lives up to its name: Autumn Brilliance. It will grow 15’ to 25’ tall and 15’ wide.
Allegany Serviceberry or Smooth Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) is another variety often sold in Garden Centers in our area. Allegany is one of the tallest serviceberry trees; and will grow 15 to 40 feet.
