We grow 14 varieties of lilacs at our nursery. The best known of the lilacs are the old fashion common purple and the common white lilacs. These lilacs are among the first that bloom in the spring and the bloom is from 3 to 4 weeks depending on the average air temperatures. They can grow 10' to 12' + in height. Like all lilacs, the more sun they have the more flowering occurs. Large lilacs are often used in border plantings.
A variety of the common lilac called Yankee Doodle is wonderfully fragrant, with a
single deep purple flower and grows 6' to 8' tall. They are of value because the flower is consistently deep purple whereas the common purple lilac has flower color that can vary from blue to purple from plant to plant.
Lilacs begin to flower relatively early in the season; some earlier and some later. They can mature anywhere from 4 ' to 12' plus in height depending on variety. Flowers can be white to pink; blue to purple and wine red; variegated white and red. Some have single flowers and others have double flowers. Also, the degree of fragrance can very significantly. Some have leaves that are quite different than the typical leaf of the common lilacs.
If you like the fragrance, the flower and the unique beauty of lilacs, you can plant several varieties, so you can enjoy them for several weeks from spring through early summer.

Dear Garden Center Customer:
Thank you for your 2020 Garden Center patronage! We appreciate your purchases at the Garden Center.
We got a late start last spring because of the virus, but had a good supply of shrubs, trees, and perennials -and as usual around Mother’s Day, we received our shipment of annuals. We were uncertain about how sales would be, but we were pleasantly surprised by surging sales through the spring and summer months. We diligently watched our inventory and ordered more plants as needed throughout the season.
In December we started ordering new plants for this season. We have found that some varieties of plants were in short supply by Mid -March.
If you are looking for a certain variety of plant, please call us at (231) 342-0087. If we do not have what you are looking for in our inventory, we can check for availability, price, and pick up the plants for you (if available). We travel down state throughout the spring and early summer and choose plants form several nurseries.
We also order bare root plants and plants grown in small containers.
We replant these plants in larger pots and grow them in our poly-houses; trees will be put in 7-, 10- and 15-gallon pots with organic potting soil and grown outside. Typically, most of these plants will be rooted and ready for sale late summer and throughout the fall.
It has been a privilege serving you. Check below at our early inventory of plants.
Have a good growing season!!
Respectfully
Dorian & Sandy Dobias

STAYCATION
STAYCATIONS FOR YOUR HEALTH WELL BEING
Probably one of the advantages of plants that we often forget. Plants can help provide physical health and help improve mental well-being. * When you work in a garden the feel-good factor increases dramatically. Did you know that one hour of raking, digging, and moving stone can burn almost as many calories as an hour of light jogging? Not only that, but the physical activity can give you a good night’s sleep!
It is true: plants- shrubs, trees, perennials, and annuals are a pleasure to behold. You become relaxed and become calm almost instantly in their presence. Stress melts away as your eye and attention turn to a plant’s color, form, fragrance, and feel. Gardening produces a chemical reaction in your brain that improves mood- gardening makes us happy! Gardening can give us great therapeutic health. Then there are other benefits- the sunshine, the fresh air, cut flowers, the bounty, and the satisfaction of creating and maintaining your garden.

Staycations --Creating a Sanctuary
When we find it necessary to stay and vacation at home, we can also create landscaping features which actually make our home a place to enjoy in new ways, more than just a landscape planting. Adding walks, benches, and patios can provide a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary and furnish an outdoor living area that can be used as a breakfast retreat, a reading area, or just an area to experience the solitude of nature. Properly landscaped areas can not only function as living space, but also can provide added solitude and enjoyment. Choosing the right combination of plants - considering types of flowers, color, time of flowering, texture of leaves, and the use of companion plants - is an important part of your décor. Plants continue to appeal to the eye throughout the year and not just at vacation time. A proper mixture of plants can accent your total landscaping through each season. Some plants can bring nature to you, with fruits, flowers, stems and roots that help draw wild birds and animals. Trees can provide shade to cool your home; windbreaks with evergreens can protect the intrusion of wind and create a courtyard to keep your area secluded. They also serve to insulate your house from the winter cold and actually bring down the cost of heating.
